![]() The InfraRed Detector (IRD) in combination with a Gas Chromatograph (GC) is a hyphenated system that combines the separating power of the GC with the structural identification of the IRD.
INFRARED DETECTOR (IRD)
This dedicated FTIR Detector for an Agilent GC is the only analytical infrared instrument designed for the chromatographer’s point-of-view. The result is an instrument that requires a minimum bench space with optimized, dedicated optics for highest sensitivity. The IRD software is integrated into GC software and provides efficient instrument control and data acquisition.
Theory
Within molecules, atoms vibrate with well defined frequencies characteristic of bonds within the molecule. These frequencies are in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. When a sample is placed in a beam of infrared radiation it will absorb energy at those frequencies. The resulting infrared absorbance spectrum is one of the most characteristic physical properties of a compound.
Unique Design
The IRD is the only analytical infrared instrument designed from the chromatographer's point-of-view. The result is an instrument that requires a minimum of bench space with optimized, dedicated optics for highest sensitivity. The IRD software is integrated into GC software and provides efficient instrument control and data acquisition.
The design of the IRD provides highly accurate molecular level identifications of unknowns. Using a flow cell that allows molecules to freely rotate in a low energy environment, a molecule can be keep intact and allows a user to determine molecule geometry and identify and quantitate unknowns.
Unprecedented Sensitivity
The IRD detects 5 nanograms of isobutyl methacrylate or dodecane at a signal-to-noise ratio of 150:1 - several times more sensitive than any other vapor-phase flow cell FTIR now available.
The IRD has the sensitivity and stability required to make capillary GC/FTIR practical in the chromatography lab. It is rugged and small, taking only 20.3 linear centimeters of bench space and it is designed for demanding day-to-day work.

TITAN MODEL XL
Part Numbers
For increased sensitivity, the Titan™ large volume injectors have been packaged with IST for GC/MS software. This allows the Titan™ systems to utilize the power of IST for GC/MS to "see through" the matrix and identify the fingerprint/signature of the compounds of interest.
